Frequently asked questions

Does dictation work offline?

Yes. Speech recognition runs on your iPhone, with automatic language detection in 25 supported languages. Your dictation audio is not sent to the cloud. You can also write, edit, search, and organize notes without an internet connection.

Do I need an OpenAI API key?

No. An API key is only needed for optional AI editing, such as improving a draft, summarizing, or translating. These actions need an internet connection and send your selected text—or the current note if nothing is selected—directly to OpenAI. OpenAI bills API usage separately; a ChatGPT subscription does not include API usage.

How do I import or export notes?

Nowts can import Markdown (.md) files. Use the share action on a note to export it as a .md file, or export all your notes as a .zip archive from Settings. Save exports somewhere outside Nowts if you want a separate copy.

How does automatic deletion work?

You can choose when notes auto-delete or keep them indefinitely. Check your retention setting in Nowts Settings, and export anything you want to keep before it is deleted. Notes are stored locally; support cannot recover a deleted note for you.

Why is dictation not working?

Check that Nowts has microphone access in iPhone Settings. Try a short recording in a quiet place. If transcription fails and Retry is available, try it before closing the editor. If the problem continues, email us with your iPhone model, iOS version, and Nowts version.

How do I change text to uppercase or lowercase?

Select the text in a note, then tap Aa after the italic button in the toolbar. It changes the selection to uppercase, or to lowercase if it is already uppercase. The button is inactive when no text is selected.
